JEFFERYS' & MILLER TAKE TWIN 25's

Lee Jeffreys said that he prefers the lightning-fast pace of a 25-lap sprint over a time-biding distance race anytime.

Last night, Jeffreys took the first of two 25-lap Modified races at Bowman Gray Stadium in quick fashion. Junior Miller followed with a victory in the second race to extend his all-time victory total in the featured division to 70.

"In the 25-lappers, you have to go wide open all the way," Jeffreys said. "I like that.

"I'd rather run these. You just sit there and pace in those longer races and -- like last week in the 200-lapper -- with that double-restart rule they have now some people are just looking to turn left and a lot of cars got torn up. You don't have to worry about that in these 25-lap races."

Jeffreys, who won for the 14th time in his career, did have other concerns during last night's first race. His father, veteran driver Robert Jeffreys, became ill before qualifying and was taken to a hospital to be examined.

Lee Jeffreys said that his father was fine.

"They called me down in Victory Lane and said he was all right," Jeffreys said. "He got sick this evening and his blood pressure fell off but he's fine and is probably on the way back over here now."

Lee Jeffreys said that his dad already knew about his victory.

"He had already called a couple of times, checking to see how we came out," Lee Jeffreys said.

Jeffreys was the fastest in qualifying with a lap of 13.306 seconds (67.6 mph) on the quarter-mile track.

He held off a strong challenge from Randy Butner at the start of the first Modified race and led the rest of the way.

Butner, who paid the price of his effort to snatch the lead on the outside, got hung to the outside. Tim Brown, the winner of the season-opening 200-lapper a week earlier, moved past Butner and into second and Burt Myers grabbed third. They finished second and third, and Butner had to settle for fourth.

"Just a couple more feet and we would have had (Jeffreys) cleared," Butner said. "But it's tough on the outside. We've been second in qualifying two in a row now. If we can move up just one more spot we'll have that coveted No. 1 position."

Miller, who finished 12th in the first Modified race, started from the pole position in the second race. Mike Norman, a rookie in the Modified Division last season, elected to give up the top spot he won as result of a draw and dropped to the rear of the field.

That paved the way for Miller, who led all the way. Brad Robbins finished second and Michael Clifton was third.

Miller didn't even get to take a lap a week earlier in the 200-lapper, after damaging his car in a parade lap, but he turned in 25 good ones in last night's second race.

"I let these boys down last week, but they worked real hard this week and got it back together," Miller said. "I ran into Brown last week -- they stopped and I didn't see them -- and it was just a bad deal."

Miller got his first Bowman Gray Stadium victory in 1979 and became the winningest driver in the featured division in 2006. He said he isn't planning on stopping at victory No. 70.

"We're going to go for a lot more and see what happens," Miller said.

Derek Stoltz and Gary Ledbetter won 20-lap races for the Sportsman Division. Doug Wall won a 20-lap Street Stock race, and Matt Hill and Dale Barneycastle won 15-lap Stadium Stock races.

Stoltz led all the way in the first Sportsman race. Keith McMichael finished second and Luke Fleming was third.

In the second Sportsman race, Gary Ledbetter overtook Bryant Robertson for an early lead that he never relinquished. It was Ledbetter's first Bowman Gray victory. Kenny Bost finished second and Scott Hall third.

Ronnie Baron, Steven Truell and Stoltz were involved in a wild opening-lap crash, which sent car pieces sailing along the backstretch.

A 100-lap Modified race is the scheduled feature race next Saturday night.
