Tim Brown Wins Pole an First Modified Feature Event
BGS Rookie Danny Bohn Get first win

A veteran shared the spotlight with a rookie at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday night.

Eight-time champion Tim Brown got his 55th career victory in the first of two 25-lap races for the featured Modified Division. But it was Danny Bohn who was a surprise winner in the second race, in just his third career start.

"I can't believe the second time here I'm in victory lane," said Bohn, 22, who moved from New Jersey to North Carolina two years ago, works for Ray Evernham and also races dirt cars.

He made his debut at Bowman Gray where his grandfather, Parker Bohn, came south to compete in one Modified race back in the 1950s for the first time in the season opener April 30.

Brown didn't get the result he wanted in Bowman Gray's opener, but his follow-up was just fine.

Brown, who was dumped to 11th place after a tangle in the final lap of the opening-night 200-lapper, rebounded with a flag-to-flag victory in Saturday night's first race.

"We were definitely disappointed not to contend for the win last week, but it doesn't always go your way," Brown said. "But it says a lot about this race team to come right back after a bad run, to sit on the pole and win the race."

Brown was the fastest in qualifying for the second straight week, locking up the pole position with a lap of 13.374 seconds (67.3 mph) on the quarter-mile track.

That was the easy part. From there, he had to fend off consistent pressure from opening-night winner Burt Myers, including a parting shot in the final lap. But Brown hung on, with Burt Myers finishing second and his brother, Jason Myers, third.

"We had something going on with the carburetor that made it tough when we'd get in the corner, but we came out fine," said Brown, who won for the 55th time in the Modified Division, tying him for third with Paul Radford on Bowman Gray's all-time victories list.

Lee Jeffreys and Modified rookie Joseph Brown experienced some tough luck in the first race, getting tangled in the second lap and remaining that way. Jeffreys' front bumper snagged Brown's rear bumper, and both cars had to be towed, together, and neither returned.

Six-time champion Junior Miller had even worse fortune, not being able to start the race because of mechanical problems.

Brown drew an "8" for the inverted start of the second race, putting Bohn, who finished eighth in the first race, on the pole. Bohn held off Brad Robbins at the start, then hung on despite pressure from runner-up Jonathan Brown in the late stages.

"I wasn't expecting this," said Bohn, who became the 118th feature-race winner at Bowman Gray. "I knew the car was good after the first race, starting 19th and finishing eighth. And I've got to thank Tim Brown for drawing that 8."

Jonathan Brown, who moved into a tie with defending champion Burt Myers in the early-season standings, said he was impressed.

"I've talked to Danny the last two weeks, and he's figured this place out real fast," Jonathan Brown said. "That's not an easy thing to do. I saw him earlier, and he said his car was fast, and he proved it out there. I couldn't get by him without dirtying him up, and I wasn't going to do that. I tried to worry him a little bit, but he didn't mess up. For his second time here, hat's off to him."

Tommy Neal and Barry Edwards won 20-lap races for the Sportsman Division. John McNeal won a caution-filled 20-lap Street Stock race, and Drew Moffitt won a 15-lap race for the Stadium Stock Division. The second scheduled Stadium Stock race was stopped because of rain.

Neal led every lap of the first Sportsman race. Taylor Branch finished second and Kevin Neal was third. In the second Sportsman race, Edwards led all the way. His brother Kyle Edwards finished second and Derek Stoltz third.
